RIM finally have a plan

04Oct10

According to the Register, RIM plan on replacing the current Blackberry OS with the PlayBook‘s newly announced tablet OS eventually.

The aquisition of QNX appears to be more than just a play for the tablet market, Blackberry OS 7 is rumoured to be the last generation of the current OS, after which they will be moving to the QNX created OS for the handsets as well as tablets.

This is probably for the best, the current OS is showing it’s age, and as the article points out, they can run a Java Virtual Machine if they still want to run the wealth of current “super” apps. Much like Symbian, the current OS just isn’t up to the task of running a modern smartphone.
