H264 video codec: Free forever

26Aug10

Well this changes the game in terms of HTML5 video codecs.

MPEG-LA, the patent pool organisation for the H.264 codec, have said it will be royalty free for web videos, forever.  This pretty much puts an end to the main complaint of Google and other open codec supporters that wanted OGG Theora/WebM/VP8 to be adopted for HTML5 video.  Some feared that MPEG-LA might turn around in a few years, once H.264 was all pervasive, and start charging royalties for every content provider using it to encode HTML5 web videos.

Looks like our new format war is on.
