BBC’s Project Canvas approved

28Jun10
I’m pretty excited about the prospect of the BBC’s Project Canvas.  Last week came the news that this had been approved by the BBC Trust
This is an internet connected set top box specification for delivering TV and other content from public service broadcasters.  Essentially very similar to the TV on Demand already provided by Virgin Media but as an open industry standard that should make things easier for content providers and hardware manufacturers.  It’s a specification for a hardware iPlayer for all channels if you will.
The reason the project is so interesting is that this should allow viewers to watch what they want, when they want, across all the major channel.  If this delivers on that promise I think it could give the public exactly what they have been asking for and seriously tackle the large amounts of torrenting at the moment.
