Tip: Stop unwanted images and thumbnails showing in the Android photo gallery

I noticed when I went in to the photo gallery on Android phones that you sometimes get unwanted images showing up.  Thumbnails or album covers stored on the SD card all get scanned and the folder is added to the gallery.
The solution to this is actually surprisingly simple.  If you want to set a folder on your SD card so that any images it contains are not shown in the photo gallery, do the following:
1) On your laptop, create a file called .nomedia
Yes, it has a full stop at the start and it should have no file extension (careful if you are on Windows and have viewing file extensions turned off)
2) Connect your Android phone to your laptop via USB and access it as a Mass Storage device, copy the .nomedia file into any and all folders that you don’t want showing up in the photo gallery.
N.B This will actually tell the system to ignore all media in whatever folder the .nomedia file is dropped in.  So MP3s won’t show in the music player, videos won’t show up in your built in video player.

  1. I can’t name a file that on windows. I type in “.nomedia” as the file name and it says “You must type a filename”. Am I missing something?

    • I’m not sure, but what you can do is download a file manager app to your phone and just create the file that way;no need to use a PC.

      I’d recommend ES File Explorer.

try create a regular named file, and rename it on “command prompt”!
      Example: “rename myfile.nomedia .nomedia”

You can rename the file using the windows prompt console.
For example, create any txt empty file and go to the prompt, navigate to the txt file containing folder and type:
      rename file.txt .nomedia
